Language and Law: Forensic Linguistics

My expertise is in linguistics, the study of language. As professor of English, I teach courses in writing, literature, and journalism, as well as linguistics. Within linguistics, my special interest is the American language, both historically and at the present day.  I have consulted for two of the leading publishers of dictionaries.

Since 1981 I have also served as executive secretary of the American Dialect Society, a national scholarly organization for the study of the English language in North America.

Both my literary training and my linguistic practice have involved close analysis of language and its uses.

For more than thirty years I have consulted for attorneys and law enforcement agencies. I have given oral advice, written statements, and testimony on:

• Interpretation of texts (letters, contracts, application forms, ordinances, etc.)
• Definitions of terms, both denotations and connotations
• Libel
• Copyright and trademark infringement
• Authorship identification
• Readability and understandability of documents
