Since 1981 I have been Executive Secretary of the American Dialect Society, a national association of several hundred members, mostly faculty at colleges and universities, who are interested in all aspects of the English language in North America, past and present.
The Society sponsors a journal, American Speech, published by Duke University Press. It also meets annually with the Linguistic Society of America. At the meeting in 1990, I began the American Dialect Society's annual vote on Word of the Year, the longest-running vote of its kind.
